Guide to must-have tools

Maria Jackson

You may not be a D.I.Y. enthusiast or have any formal training in fixing things, but you should have some basic tools that help you fix simple things around the house. Having some basic tools at home helps you to hammer down a protruding nail, tighten a loose screw or assemble and disassemble simple furniture or appliances. You should take the necessary precautions and use protective gear while using these tools.

Three major tool types
Tools are categorized based on what powers them. The three main types of tools are as follows:

  • Hand tools
Hand tools, as the name indicates, are used manually without electricity. They are basic and simple tools that you can use to complete simple tasks around the house, garage, and yard. The important hand tools you may need around the house include flat, cross-slotted screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, wrenches, pullers, vises, clamps, snips, saws, and drills.
  • Machine and power tools
Machines and power tools are similar to hand tools but are powered by electricity or batteries. They are more powerful and can do complex tasks that require more strength and force. You need some knowledge and safety precautions to handle these powerful tools. They help you finish your tasks quickly, efficiently, and precisely. Power tools are useful for factories and industries’ plumbing, electricity, construction, and heavy tasks. Some useful power tools for D.I.Y. or home improvement projects include impact wrenches, power drills, power sanders, and circular saws.
  • Pneumatic tools
Pneumatic tools are powered by compressed air and are used in workshops and industries that require high-volume and high-torque tools. Some pneumatic tools can perform multiple tasks and are safer and lighter than power tools. Examples of pneumatic tools include nail guns, staplers, paint sprayers, airbrushes, drills, impact wrenches, metal sheets, and tire inflators.

How to choose a home hand tool kit
A hand tool kit comes with a set of tools necessary for repairs or home improvement projects. If you have one at home, you don’t have to borrow or buy one in haste in an emergency. You also don’t have to hire a handyperson for simple tasks you can do independently. Various hand tool sets are available in many sizes for general tasks or specific tasks around the home, garden, yard, or garage. You can pick a kit that is most suited for you. Buy a tool kit that is durable, rust- and corrosion-proof, made of high-quality material, and can be stored conveniently.

When you buy a tool kit, buy essential safety gear like gloves, goggles, and boots. Ask for a demo, wherever possible, to learn how to use these tools. Some power tools are powerful and fast, and you may be unable to control them without practice. Take time to get used to the tools before actively using them for specific projects.
